Sandpoint is situated in the northern panhandle of Idaho at the foot of the Selkirk Mountains (home to Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort) and is the County Seat. Sandpoint sits on the north edge of Lake Pend Oreille, which is the largest natural body of fresh water in Idaho. The Lake is more than 43 miles in length, is more than 6 miles wide at its widest point and has more than 111 miles of shoreline. Most amazing is the Lake?s depth, which is more than 1,100 feet in places!
Sandpoint has evolved into an artistic and cultural community. A number of nationally recognized artists make their home in Sandpoint. There is also a very active performing arts community with frequent offerings of music, dance, and drama. The Pend Oreille Arts Council brings national acts which include ballet, opera, classical music, and popular performance art works. The historic Panida Theater, built in the 1920s, operates as a performing arts center that attracts a wide range of musical and dramatic acts, including regular plays performed by the local Unicorn Theater. And, in the summer, The Festival at Sandpoint features classical music from the Spokane Symphony and popular acts which over the years have included Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Lyle Lovett, Johnny Cash, Natalie Cole, BB King, Robert Cray, Nanci Griffith and many others.
